Impact of ADHD on family life
An often overlooked aspect of ADHD is the impact on family life.
While so much of the assessment and treatment is focused on school engagement and behaviour, ADHD impacts family life in significant and often harmful ways.
The attention and concentration difficulties…
At home lead to lost shoes, books, uniforms and chaotic living spaces cluttered with the shoes that were thrown in different directions as they entered the door after school.
Difficulties with time management…
Leads to school morning stress to get out the door and weekend frustration when your teen is still sitting in their room, despite reminders to get ready as the family is going out.
Emotion regulation difficulties…
Their excitement is so great, but so is their anger.
Impulsivity…
Leads to sibling blowups over being hit or punched in the back seat of the car again.
If these things are happening in your household with ADHD, I want you to know it's not your fault.
You're not a bad parent.
AND you also don’t have a bad kid.
These are the challenges of ADHD.
Of course it affects family peace, calm and connectedness.
But it doesn’t have to be as hard as it is right now.
To help you out, I'm holding a brand new live parent training about how to parent an ADHD teen to help you move from arguments and nagging to connection and action.
In this training we will cover
- How to help your teen do what they need to do (chores, organisation, homework, respect).
- How to protect your teen from the hidden dangers of ADHD.
- How to manage the stress of being a parent to a teen with ADHD.
