The Myth That Hurts Families Most During The Teen Years...
Teens are “supposed” to push parents away.
But the truth is:
While they do shift toward peers.
And they do need more autonomy.
They don’t need to disconnect from their parents
They still need:
a home base
safe person(s)
with a nervous system that doesn’t punish them for being a teenager
The connection shifts, and it doesn’t have to break.
But maintaining that connection is tough when they’re on a device or behind a closed door whenever they’re at home.
I had a conversation recently on the Unmuted Love podcast all about this.
In this episode we talked about:
- harms related to excessive device use
- the second window of attachment in the teen years
- the impact of difficult beginnings and trauma on the parent teen relationship
- where to focus when it comes to limit setting and boundaries
